THE CHIROPRACTIC NEUROLOGIST

The chiropractic neurologist is uniquely qualified to serve patients as the result of specialized training and clinical application.

The coursework required to become a Diplomate of the American Chiropractic Neurology Board consists of three years of postgraduate study. Curriculum is designed to incorporate all the aspects of neurology with special emphasis on diagnostics and clinical application. The topics are too numerous to mention all here, but they include neuroanatomy and physiology, electroneurodiagnostics, and rehabilitation. Every course module is accompanied with appropriate case study involving patients who demonstrate disorders relevant to that topic; to name a few; Parkinsons, peripheral nerve injuries, learning disorders, head injuries, apnea, movement disorders, stroke, multiple sclerosis, migraine, chronic pain, seziure disorders, vertigo, cardiac arrhythmias and tachycardias, dementia and visual disturbances. Training also includes evaluation and management of coma and disorders of consciousness. Upon completion of all the necessary hours of coursework, the chiropractic neurologist is eligible to participate in the American Chiropractic Neurology Board examination. This consists of three days of written and clinical demonstration of the knowledge and skills required to achieve specialist status.

In clinical practice, the chiropractic neurologist applies the techniques and skills of a neurologic specialist with every patient. As the patient is interviewed and examined; each system is considered to determine if it is intact, and its precise state of functioning. This is important, in that not only are systems and organs examined to see whether they have been damaged or not, but also to determine how close they are to achieving appropriate function. Many times parts of the human body that are not functioning, are not directly damaged, but instead are just not receiving the appropriate stimulation to make them work. This approach is one of the keys that make the chiropractic neurologist unique. After a complete examination, the level of the lesion is determined. If special tests or outside consultations are needed, they are ordered and integrated. Next a plan as to what needs to happen, on the cellular level, is formulated. Then the chiropractic neurologist considers all the available methods of evoking appropriate change according to the cellular needs of the patient. Methods may include coupled adjustments, specific exercises, light/auditory/tactile/electric/olfactory/etc... stimulation, oxygen and nutritional supplementation, bracing, and ergonomic or lifestyle changes. After treatment the patient is re-examined immediately to determine the effects of the intervention on the patient. In this way not only is the examination itself diagnostic, but the treatment is as well. The working diagnosis and treatment plan are then re-evaluated and will evolve as the examination indicates. This is the basis for every patient visit whether it be the first one or subsequent visits..

Most importantly, the specialist in chiropractic neurology is dedicated to assisting all patients with achieving the maximum expression of their humanism.

There are approximately 250 chiropractic neurologists in the world. For the location of  the one nearest you go to Diplomats.
